Taking World War II veterans to see memorial before time runs out

      The aging veterans gingerly walk from the plane in the nation’s capital. Some get pushed in wheelchairs. A brass band strikes up World War II era tunes. Strangers rise to their feet and clap their hands.
      “Why are they doing this?” says Frank Bales, 86, a co-pilot on a B-24 during World War II. “I feel as humbled as a mouse.”
      Walter Victor was overwhelmed as he made his way through the crowd. “The chills came over me. Very seldom do you see something like that,” says the 92-year-old army veteran.

Patrick Swayze

Patrick Swayze, whose hunky good looks and sympathetic performances in such films as “Dirty Dancing” and “Ghost” made him a romantic idol to millions, died Monday. He was 57.
      Patrick Swayze’s doctor said in March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from pancreatic cancer.
     
      Swayze died of pancreatic cancer, his publicist, Annett Wolf, told CNN.
      “Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months,” Wolf said in a statement Monday.

Violence scars Iraq

      A series of bombings killed 48 people and wounded 231 in Iraq on Monday, the Ministry of Interior said, fueling fears of more sectarian violence.
      At least seven people were killed and 46 wounded when a car bomb exploded near laborers gathered in the Shiite neighborhood of Al-Amil in Baghdad, officials said. Continue reading

Two russian subs spotted off east coast

      Two Russian attack submarines have been cruising in the Atlantic off the East Coast of the United States, a senior defense official said Wednesday. Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said their presence is not causing alarms to go off.
      “So long as they are operating in international waters, as, frankly, we do around the world, and are behaving in a responsible way, they are certainly free to do so, and it doesn’t cause any alarm within this building,” he said.

Laura Ling on Wednesday expressed the shock she and Euna Lee felt when former President Clinton showed up in Pyongyang, North Korea, to secure the two journalists’ release.      
    “We feared at any moment that we could be sent to a hard labor camp and then suddenly we were told we were going to a meeting,” a tearful and emotional Ling said at a news conference in California shortly after arriving by plane with Lee and Clinton.
