Cazenovia, NY — Plans for a new 73,000-square-foot complex could bring medical offices, residential apartments and more parking to the heart of the village of Cazenovia.
Developers Ed Green and Scott Shannon presented plans for a facility along Chittenango Creek on Riverside Drive parallel to the Route 20 corridor to the village board tonight.
Green said St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center has expressed interest in occupying a medical office on the first floor of the complex. Two floors of two-bedroom apartments would occupy the top levels, with a maximum of 36 units planned, each between 900- and 1,400-square-feet.
The new complex will also include about 100 parking spaces, with 40 spaces in a basement-level garage and about 60 spots adjacent to the Cazenovia Public Library.
The property was formerly home to the town of Cazenovia’s highway garage. Town officials have spent the past several years clearing soils polluted by petroleum from the site, working with the state Department of Environmental Conservation on the remediation.
Architect Robert Haley said the parking lots would cap the once-polluted soils, avoiding further pollution of Chittenango Creek by runoff. The site plans include plantings to restore natural vegetation along the creek, with rain gardens and a proposed public park. In the future, developers would like to hook their property to the exsiting creekwalk.
More than 50 residents attended the presentation and spent more than an hour asking questions about parking and traffic. Many residents expressed concern that the project is too large for the site and said developers needed to add access from Albany Street rather than designing a single entrance point on Chenango Street.
A joint committee of village and town officials spent months developing criteria for the site’s development. Village Trustee Peggy Van Arnam said the group’s findings included a concern for neighborhood heritage, connection to village, the utilization of natural resources, improved parking, co-existence with library and neighbors and improvement to the economy by adding to the tax base.

In a very close race for two seats on the Cazenovia Town Board, incumbent Pat Race ran away with it while incumbent Kristi Andersen just edged out first time candidate Walt Joncas for the second seat.
Ralph Monforte was voted in unanimously as the new Cazenovia Town Supervisor, replacing Liz Moran at the helm.
Republican Joncas, boasting that he had attended more town meetings than anyone the last several years, fell about 75 votes shy of a victory. More than 3,000 residents cast their votes for the town board.

With Election Day approaching, Cazenovia Town Supervisor Liz Moran prepares to leave her post. Ralph Monforte is seeking the supervisor position running unopposed.
Moran has spent the last four years steering the town through building moratoriums and the comprehensive plan. She has her own business, Ecolab, and a family, and has decided to shelve her public life at this time.
Democrat Kristi Andersen, who was elected to the town board four years ago along with Moran, is running again. She will be competing with Republican candidates, incumbent Pat Race and newcomer Walt Joncas. Voters will be asked to select two of the three candidates on the ballot.
If the Republicans prevail, the town board will revert back to an all male cast, along with board members Sparky Christakos and Bill Zupan.
Either way, the political landscape will be altered as the Monforte era is ushered in.

Let’s talk : The Greater Cazenovia Area Chamber of Commerce
Let us know by logging on to cazenoviachamber.com or @ Facebook
Last Spring, the Greater Cazenovia Area Chamber of Commerce formed an economic development sub committee to look at the economic health of our community. One area that the diversified group has been evaluating is the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s “Main Street Program” as a means to revitalize Cazenovia. The committee is now looking for feedback from the community.
In order to begin the discussion, the chamber has opened a facebook account (cazenoviachamber @ Facebook). Don’t Facebook? Write a letter and send it to the chamber office at 59 Albany Street, Cazenovia, NY 13035, or email cazchamber@windstream.net.
Tell us what goods, services or events you are having to leave Cazenovia to buy or attend. And, if they existed here, you’d be glad to shop and stay local. What’s missing here? Let’s talk. We want to hear from EVERYONE!
